Around the farmstead…
Signs of spring are pretty much everywhere – pear trees blooming, oaks showing early leaves, clover beginning to emerge, and bluebirds everywhere! Which are always welcome sights as we get ready to see the farm, well, look like an active farm again. Several veggies are up and as we seem to be getting out of the near-freezing temperatures germination will accelerate for many more. Spinach, radish, carrots, various greens, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, beet, onion and peas are all doing their thing and even a few asparagus spears are up.
At this stage we have roughly two acres planted out which is great but we have quite a ways to go since we’ll have seven in production for spring. Fortunately, and certainly thanks to y’all who make this possible, we’ve added a couple of new tools to the operation this year – a bed/row hipper which makes setting our raised beds a breeze (my favorite new toy) and a flame weeder (Christina’s new favorite tool – she really likes fire). Although yesterday, while setting out a onions, I did look over to see a bed of over-wintered cabbage ablaze. Farming some days can be frustrating but, it turns out she really wasn’t trying to burn the place down. 🙂 The bed had been mulched with pine straw and C got a little zealous with that little flame thrower…
