Spring is coming!

Posted on

Hey all!  It’s been a busy week or so around the farmstead…

Seedlings are doing well and more are being started each week.  We’ve got plants in the ground and are direct seeding of many varieties (lots of greens, brassicas, carrots, radish, beets, kale, spinach, etc.).  For you tomato lovers, we’ve got plants that are looking stout and about 2 foot high.  🙂

Field preparation has been the name of the game over the past few weeks.  With more area in production this year it’s been a bit of a race with mother nature offering some pretty, warm days and then tossing in some good solid rains.  But all in all, the place is starting to take shape for the season ahead.  We’re seeing the first signs of grass and clover returning to the pastures so it won’t be long before the freshness of spring is here!

Many of you know that we have a thing about working within our community and supporting all the skills it takes to keep one vibrant.  So, this year we have teamed up with a local craftsman near the farm to help us build the crates for this year’s CSA…  Same look and feel, just built sturdier and locally!  We’re also using locally sourced pine (which here in east TX is a completely sustainable material) so we’re pretty excited about that too.

CSA Details…

So lots of you have asked about eggs, bread, & coffee.  We’re working on building up a web form that we’ll put up on the site (along with varieties & pricing) to make it easier to get your add-on orders in each week.  Hope to have that done by next weekend, but we’ll certainly let y’all know once it’s up.

We’ve got some new community pick-up points this season – In addition to Rockwall, McKinney, and Murphy it looks like we’ve got Garland, Plano, and East Dallas.  Also, we’re moving our Mt. Pleasant location a few minutes west to Pittsburg.  We’re getting a pretty good feel for where everyone is located so we should have all the location details/days/times out to ya shortly.

Shares are filling up and we’re excited to see all of you from last year and very much looking forward to meeting those of you who are new to the farm!  For those of you who’ve already sent your payments for the season, thank you!  If you haven’t had a chance to send off a check, that’s okay, but please remember that we’re getting close to the beginning of the season and as more folks express interest in shares we may end up in a first come first serve place again.

Okay – back to it for us…  We’ll get another update out to y’all within the week!

Very best from all of us here in the Crate!
